Many people assume that watery eyes mean their eyes are producing too many tears. Often the opposite is often true.
One of the most common causes of excessive watery eyes is dry eye disease. When the surface of the eye becomes dry or irritated, the eye responds by producing extra tears. The extra leads overloads the eyes leading to watery eyes. The eyes can also become dry and irritated.
Common symptoms of dry eye include:
- Excessive watering
- Burning or stinging
- Gritty sensation
- Blurred vision that comes and goes
- Red eyes
- Difficulty using a computer
Why is it worse at work?
At work we spend long hours staring at a screen in an airconditioned environment. When concentrating for long periods it is natural for the eye to blink less. This results in increased evaporation and combined with the dry environment can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.
If your eyes water frequently, become red or uncomfortable, or your vision fluctuates during the day it may be due to dry eye. A comprehensive eye examination will determine the cause and a treatment plan can be recommended.
