Frequently asked Questions

Here are some commonly asked questions about Eyes On, optometry and laser surgery. If you have additional question or would like more information, please call your nearest store during office hours.

1. How much does it cost to visit an optometrist at Eyes On?

General eye examinations for Australian residents, who hold a Medicare card, are bulk billed to Medicare. The cost of an eye examination, for those who do not hold a Medicare card, depends on the type of consultation required. Please contact us for more information.

Contact lens consultations are usually not covered by Medicare. It will depend on the type of lenses required as to the fee charged. You will be advised of the costs involved at the first consultation. Please feel free to phone us regarding any queries on 03 9629 1808.

2. Do I need to make an appointment to see an optometrist and do I need a referral?

It is recommended that you make an appointment.  You do not require a referral. Appointments are made on the half hour and go for about 20 to 30 minutes. It is advised that you allow some time for frame selection, after your consultation, if you require a new pair of glasses.

3. Can anyone wear contact lenses?

Almost anyone can wear contact lenses these days. Contact lenses were traditionally designed to correct distance vision, however with the recent release of the new bifocal contact lenses we are now fitting lenses to people of all ages and different prescriptions.

Please ask about a free contact lens trial at your next visit.

4. How often should I get my eyes tested?

A general eye examination is recommended once every two to three years. Children should be examined before starting pre-school at about 3 years of age. They should then be reassessed throughout their life at regular intervals every two to three years.

If you wear contact lenses annual checks are advised.

Your optometrist will advise as to how often you will need to be reassessed at your next visit. It is important to remember that your optometrist is not only assessing your vision but also your ocular health.

5. Does reading in the dark ruin my eyes?

No, this is an "old wives tale." There is no evidence that reading in poor light will actually physically change the eye. It will however place unnecessary strain on the eyes and make your eye muscles tire more easily. For this reason it is recommended that you read with good lighting.

6. Can Laser Eye Surgery fix all eye problems?

Excimer Laser Surgery cannot fix all eye problems however it is a very safe and effective procedure now used to correct people who are short-sighted, long-sighted or people with astigmatism. It cannot be used to correct turned eyes, nor is it suitable for those with age related reading problems. If you are unsure as to whether you could benefit from this procedure, please contact us on 03 9600 3888.
